How Ampliqon kickstarted their lab with flowbot® ONE

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ampliqon established a testing facility and decided to automate the pipetting of PCR sample preparation right from the start with two flowbot® ONEs.

“We knew of the flowbot® ONE through another company, and if something is working great then it is a good idea to listen,” says Carsten Mamsen Jessen, Molecular Biologist at Ampliqon, when asked why they chose the flowbot® ONE as their automation solution.

Our flow is more efficient because we can do other things, such as prepare the next racks, while the robot is working. This frees up a lot of our time.

Creating a healthy work environment

During the height of the pandemic, Ampliqon tested around 1000 samples per day without problem.

“Our flow is more efficient because we can do other things, such as prepare the next racks, while the robot is working. This frees up a lot of our time,” Carsten Mamsen Jessen explains and adds;

“Without automated pipetting, we would have people working around the clock, and in the weekend, to keep up with demand. We have had deadlines where we had to provide the test answers of up to 1000 samples within 6 hours and that would simply not have been possible with manual pipetting.”

Aside from gaining a faster workflow and being able to keep up with demand, Ampliqon was aiming at creating a healthy work environment when they decided to invest in laboratory automation.

“With our flowbot® ONEs we can spare the staff the burden of sitting in an awkward position while trying to reach impossible deadlines. We are not interested in overburdening the staff and it is important for us to have a good and healthy work environment,” says Carsten Mamsen Jessen.

Looking towards the future

In the analysis laboratory at Ampliqon, around 10 people are using the flowbot® ONEs. Yet, according to Carsten, they have not needed to train the staff. “Once the programs are in, everything is pretty self-evident. And then it is literally just a matter of pressing ‘start’. We have had no real need for training,” he confirms.

Ampliqon is already looking towards the future and thinking of what else they could have in store for their flowbot® ONEs.

The company expects to move the robots from their analysis laboratory and into their development laboratory when they no longer need the COVID-19 testing facility. And so, it is safe to say that we are all looking forward to the day where it is time for them to contribute elsewhere.
