The Department of Clinical Microbiology at Herlev Hospital processes around 1 million samples every year. That involves a lot of scanning, a lot of pipetting, and a lot of data management.
This made them the perfect beta testers of ScanID – the new scanning solution for the pipetting robot, flowbot® ONE.
Developing the ultimate scanning solution
ScanID enables labs to scan an entire rack of 1D or 2D labeled tubes in seconds. After scanning, the racks can be placed on the flowbot® ONE, which now holds the sample IDs, for further processing.
With assistance from The Department of Clinical Microbiology, Flow Robotics has ensured that the device will meet the needs in the labs. From lab functionality to having a good fit for the dishwasher – everything was tested, discussed, and possibly adjusted. It’s all in the details, after all.

Innovative measures to prevent errors.
The Department of Clinical Microbiology was already in possession of 3 flowbot® ONEs that had been used for COVID-19 testing during the pandemic.
The pipetting robots will now be put to a different use in their lab which is analyzing a broad variety of microorganisms – both viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic. ScanID will play an important part in the workflow.
We believe that our sample tubes are in good hands with ScanID which also acts as an error-control by warning us if two barcodes are identical. And then, of course, it is quite clever that it can both read 1D and 2D barcodes.

”We handle a lot of tests, and we want to be able to track sample IDs as they are being transferred by the robot in an easy and secure manner. There is always a risk of sample switching and misplacement errors during a manual pre-analytical process, and we can see ScanID helping us eliminate that risk. That we don’t need to remove the tubes from the rack during scanning is very convenient and can save us valuable time,” says Thomas Sundelin.
He also sees ScanID as a way of providing error control and increasing overall lab efficiency.
