Flowbot® ONE teaches students robotics skills.

Arming students with the right qualifications

The University College Copenhagen uses flowbot® ONE to give their students the skills within robotics that businesses are currently looking for and, thus, set the laboratory technicians of tomorrow up for success.

Courses in robotics are high on the agenda at the University College Copenhagen, where future laboratory technicians are educated. In fact, the Board of Education has added liquid handling robots to their Chemical track to prepare the students for the real world and arm them with the right qualifications.

“We see that the companies who hire our candidates are looking for skills in robotics. To meet that demand, we have added a simple and easy-to-use liquid handling robot to the program,” says Margit Wildschiødtz Fernqvist, Educational Technician in Chemistry.

“Basically, we wanted to demystify robotics up front and teach the students the value of using robots as work tools,” she explains.

We chose to go with flowbot® ONE because of its great flexibility. Different students use it for different tasks each day, so it must be easy for them to adjust to a new setup. Good customer service also factored into the decision.

Implementing flowbot® ONE in the program

The Board of Education surveyed the market and decided to implement flowbot® ONE in the program. “We chose to go with flowbot® ONE because of its great flexibility. Different students use it for different tasks each day, so it must be easy for them to adjust to a new setup. Good customer service also factored into the decision”, she adds and mentions that they have different needs than other customers, such as special racks etc.

The University College Copenhagen introduces the robot in the 2nd semester, and the students are usually doing programs within 2 hours of the introduction.

In the 3rd semester, flowbot® ONE is used in more complex projects such as determining proteins in assays. “The projects can be very complicated, with many pipetting steps, and adding the additional dimension of a robot can really provide students with skills they can use in the future”, she says.

According to Margit Wildschiødtz Fernqvist, the students are quickly convinced of the benefits of having flowbot® ONE supplement the other tasks in the lab. She believes in the impact it makes. “It is rewarding to see that companies are excited about the robotic skills we can contribute with”, she concludes.

The University College Copenhagen plan to implement flowbot® ONE in the Biotechnical track as well to further advance the ways in which robot technology can make a difference in their education programs.
